Didi glanced around the gallery, looking for a place to hide. Everyone he knew was there for the gala evening as it was his husband Tino’s big night and while he appreciated the effort, he wished it was not so embarrassing. The theme for the party was “The Body Beautiful” and it featured several nudes. It was not the nudity that bothered him as he often posed for Tino, in fact several of his charcoal drawings were framed and hung on the gallery’s walls as part of the exhibit; it was the huge canvas, featuring himself in all his naked glory, which had Didi blushing.
He wished he was oblivious to the stares and comments like Denis’ girlfriend Michelle was. Several photographs of her nude form were also hung in the gallery. Instead of being embarrassed, she was laughing and joking with a group of people. Didi nearly died when he realized his father and Greta were among the group of people chatting with her. Even worse than that was overhearing his brother, Bernd, go on and on about how proud he was of him and Amber giving an art history style lecture on Tino’s technique.
As he gulped his champagne, Didi decided that embarrassed was not a strong enough word for what he was feeling. He felt “mortified” was closer to it. He scanned the crowd and saw Tino, standing in front of that particular painting, animatedly talking about his work, and pride in his husband’s talent overrode his self-conscious discomfiture. When Tino spotted him and called him over, Didi took a deep breath and with head held high, he calmly strolled over to him.
“And this is my muse, my favorite model, my darling husband, Dieter Pawlitzki,” Tino gushed as he took his husband’s arm.
Didi nodded.
“You’re every bit the Adonis in real life that you are on canvas,” an elderly female patron said.
When his husband giggled, Didi felt his cheeks heating up. “Thanks,” he said shyly.
“And how long did it take for you to paint it?” someone else asked and just like that the attention shifted from Didi to Tino, who happily answered any and all questions thrown his way. Didi sighed in relief. He even managed to laugh when someone made a comment to his father about the painting and Didi posing in the nude and Wolfgang replied with a shrug, “I used to change his diapers when he was a baby, so this is no big deal.”
“You okay now?” Tino said as he took hold of Didi’s arm and leaned on him.
“Yeah. I used to wonder how Michelle did it. Denis has photographed her outside on more than one occasion.”
Tino smiled up at him. “You want me to paint you like that outside?” he teased.
Didi thought it over. “If it’ll make you happy…”
“Then maybe I will one of these days.”
“Okay.”
“See? I told you it wasn’t going to be as bad as you feared.”
Didi blinked. His husband was right. “Yeah…” He cupped Tino’s cheek. “I guess I was being silly, hunh?”
“Nah! Just you being you, which I love!”
“Love you too,” Didi said as he leaned towards him, and surprising himself as he was not one for public displays of affection, he kissed him long and hard much to the delight of everyone there.
