After speaking with Amber, Didi decided to throw caution to the wind and ask Tino to marry him tonight at dinner. He stopped at the supermarket on the way home and picked up what he needed to make a simple supper of spaghetti and meatballs. He also made a trip to the liquor store for a bottle of Chianti and the little Italian bakery for a half pound of the cookies Tino loved, despite knowing how to make them from scratch, as his best friend and lover liked the bakery ones better. On a whim, he also picked up six cannoli.
Didi hurried home. He wanted to set their kitchen table with the “good table cloth,” a red and white checkered piece of fabric they used for “Italian nights” along with a candle in an old Chianti bottle, because Tino loved the cheesiness of it. He also took out their “good china” that they had found at a flea market on their way home from a weekend getaway. He wanted everything to be perfect.
It was not long before Didi had a pot of homemade sauce simmering on the stove, the meatballs he made earlier swimming in it. He also set a big pot of water on the stove to boil. Everything was going well. Didi had timed it so that dinner would be ready the minute his beloved stepped through the door. He was about to put the spaghetti into the boiling water, when the phone rang. He tossed the pasta in, gave it a quick stir, and answered the phone.
“Hello?” Didi smiled when he heard Tino’s voice. “What time are you coming home? Dinner’s almost ready.” He paused. “I made spaghetti and meatballs. You’ll be here in a bit? Great! See you then! Love you!” He hung up the phone. Suddenly it felt like he had swallowed a ton of butterflies. He tried to distract himself by stirring the pasta, but it did not help. By the time Tino came home from work, he was a nervous wreck. Dinner was a blur as Didi spent most of it, trying to figure out a good way to pop the question.
“Are you okay?” Tino picked up his glass of Chianti and sipped it. “You don’t look happy or something.”
“I’m fine.” Didi picked up his glass and gulped down the wine. Dinner was nearly over and he still had not asked Tino to marry him.
“You sure?”
Didi nodded. Taking a deep breath, he stood up and got down on one knee next to a puzzled Tino. He fumbled with the ring box, before opening it. “Tino… Will you,” Didi swallowed thickly as his throat went suddenly dry, “Tino, will you marry me?”
Tino thought the earnest look on his beloved’s face was adorable. He put a hand to his mouth, afraid to speak, in case he squealed with happiness like a little girl. He nodded as he leaned forward and put his arms around Didi. When he finally found his voice, he said, “Yes!”
Didi never felt so relieved in all his life. Tino was peppering his face with kisses, he needed a drink, and to pee, but all was right in his world. His beloved said, “Yes!” He could have danced with joy, but all he could think of was that he was getting married to the love of his life.
“Let’s call our families!” Tino said.
“Okay.” And that was how Didi found himself in the kitchen, holding Tino close as his family cheered, only to repeat the process as they called the rest of their family and friends. He leaned in and kissed Tino long and hard. They were finally getting married and he could not have been happier.
