Scaring the Bejeebies Out of Him (July 21, 2020)
Title: Scaring the Bejeebies Out of Him
Prompt: Free Space/ Gremlins
Fandom: Original
Characters: Amber, Bernd, Didi, Tino, Wolfgang
Word count: 926
Rating: G
Summary: Bernd and Amber exchange Christmas presents and watch the movie he gave Amber, who can’t resist teasing him…
Author’s Notes: Thanks to my beta Kat for pinking this for me. Please also note that Amber belongs to her.
For Kat, who wanted a sequel to one of her fics and gave me the prompt…
Bernd handed Amber one of the gifts he had gotten her for Christmas. “Go ahead and open it. I also have another one for you.” He opened the gift she had given him. “Thanks! I always wanted a Furby!”
“You’re welcome and thanks. I’m sorry, but pink and grey was as close to pink as I could get.” From what she had heard about Furbies, she knew exactly why Vati had never gotten him one. Still, she could not resist getting him one.
“No worries! It’s awesome!!” Bernd grinned. “Now hurry up and open yours!”
“Okay, okay!” Amber tore off the wrapping paper. “Gremlins!! I love that movie!” Amber kissed his cheek. “Thanks!” She could not wait to watch it.
“Now open this one.” Bernd handed her another gift.
Amber opened the gift. “Gizmo.” She smiled. “Thanks!”
“I remember you asked Vati for it when we were kids and when I went out shopping with James, we found the movie and the plushie.”
“Nice!” Amber removed the plushie from the cardboard. She grinned and held it up. “Don’t feed me after midnight!” She chuckled.
“Why?”
“Don’t tell me you don’t remember the movie.”
“Nope.” He shook his head, frowning.
“Then we’ll watch it together, okay?” Amber said.
“Okay.”
After Christmas dinner was over and they helped clean up, Bernd made a big bowl of popcorn, while Amber grabbed a couple of sodas for them. The two of them headed downstairs to watch the movie in the room next to Amber’s bedroom, which was set up as place for the kids to hang out in. She had a feeling the movie was going to scare the willies out of him, again, as it was a horror movie, but she kept quiet as she wanted to share her love of them with him. The beginning of the movie was okay and Bernd actually seemed to like it, until the gremlins happened to eat after midnight and transformed. After that, he pretty much sat there with his eyes closed.
“Are you okay?”
Bernd nodded.
“You know, if you don’t want to watch it, we can watch something else.”
“No, I’m good,” Bernd squeaked. He opened his eyes and stared at the TV.
Amber doubted it, but if he wanted to bravely try to enjoy something she liked, she was not going to stop him. The movie, in her opinion, was not that scary anyway. Besides, it was hard to tell what was going to scare him. The Dracula movie with Keanu Reeves scared the bejeebies out of him, and yet, he loved the original Nosferatu when they watched it online.
When the movie finished, they brought the empty bowl and soda cans upstairs. Unwilling to put him down, Amber took Gizmo with her. While Bernd rummaged around in the cabinet for more snacks, Amber could not resist teasing him with her new plushie. She walked over to Bernd and said in what she hoped sounded like Gizmo, “Remember, don’t feed me after midnight!” She moved the plushie from side to side.
Bernd caught the movement out of the corner of his eyes. He glanced over in that direction just as Amber repeated her Gizmo impersonation. Freaking out, Bernd let out a blood curdling scream.
Amber, unable to help herself, burst out laughing.
Wolfgang, however, was not amused when he ran into the kitchen from the den. Didi and Tino quickly followed. “What is going on?!” he demanded in German.
Bernd, shaking, sputtered wordlessly.
Amber, finally catching her breath, said, “I’m sorry, Vati, we were watching a scary movie and I scared him.” She jerked her thumb at Bernd who nodded.
Tino looked at Didi and giggled. Didi tried his best to keep from laughing, but another glance at Tino had him barking out a bit of a laugh.
Wolfgang frowned and shook his head. “Behave, Amber,’ he said to her/ “You too.” He said to Tino and Didi.
“Yes, Vati.”
Wolfgang rubbed tiredly between his eyes, before leaving with the younger boys.
Bernd frowned at Amber.
She moved her plushie from side to side. “Sorry,” she said in her Gizmo voice.
“It’s not funny!”
She nodded, but feeling sorry for him as sometimes Bernd made things too easy, she playfully punched him in the arm.
“Hey!” he said as he rubbed his arm.
“It’s just a movie, Numbnuts, and this is just a plushie. They can’t hurt you.”
Bernd blushed. “I know.” He pouted.
“I’m sorry.” She set her plushie down on the kitchen table and hugged him. “If you want, we can watch The Phantom Menace.” Even though, it was her least favorite Star Wars movie next to Attack of the Clones, she figured she owed him one, plus she hoped he would sleep better afterwards.
“Yeah?”
“Yup. And if you’re good, we can watch the one where Anakin whines about sand.”
Bernd laughed. “Okay! Shall I make more popcorn or should we have chips?”
“Chips.”
“Chips it is.” Bernd scurried around the kitchen, getting more snacks for them.
Amber grabbed another can of soda for them, before they went back downstairs. While they watched the movie, she wondered if he would be able to share her love of horror movies, or that one movie he liked was a fluke. She figured she should break him in gently with something like Young Frankenstein, before moving on to something like Jaws, since he loved Sharknado as much as her twin brother James did. And if it turned out Bernd really hated horror movies, they could always watch Star Wars.
