Title: Counting Stars by Candlelight
Prompt: Candlelight
Fandom: Original
Characters: Amber, Bernd
Word count: 448
Rating: G
Summary: Bernd tells Amber they can’t winter in the yurt with baby Fritz…
Author’s Notes: Thanks to my beta Kat for pinking this for me. Please also note that Amber belongs to her. Also the line “I’m counting stars by candlelight” is a reference to a line in “Terrapin Station” by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia. That line is “Counting stars by candlelight” and it’s what inspired this fic.

For ELD, who gave me the prompt…

Bernd stood outside the yurt, flashlight in hand, while he gazed up at the night sky. It was a deep, inky blue, with thin, wispy clouds. The moon was a mere sliver of itself and Bernd noticed there were only a handful of stars, dotting the sky.

He shivered. The temperature was dropping and Bernd had a feeling the first snow of the season was going to occur that night. He wondered how long they would be able to remain in the yurt, before it became too cold for everyone. His gaze faltered, dropping from the night sky, as he followed the path of a stray snowflake. Bernd sighed. How was he going to bring this up to Amber, who was determined to live their lives on their own?

“Bernd?”

He frowned, lost in thought about Amber and it was several minutes, before he realized she really was there, calling him. He looked over his shoulder and said, “I’ll be in, in a minute.”

Amber put on her hat and coat. She left the yurt and walked over to stand next to him. “What are you doing?”

“I’m counting stars by candlelight.” Bernd smirked at her.

Amber snorted. “You do know that’s a flashlight, right?”

Bernd looked down at it. “Oh yeah…” His smirk broadened into a grin.

Amber laughed. “Seriously, what are you doing? It’s freezing and I’m surprised you’ve been out here so long.”

“Tell me about it.” He shivered. “Seriously, I think it’s going to snow tonight.” He sighed, his warm breath visible thanks to the cold. “I don’t know if we’ll be able stay out here this winter. If it was just us, you’d know I’d do it in a heartbeat, but we have Fritz to think about.” He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. Bernd nuzzled her cheek. “I’m sorry.”

“I know.” Amber snaked her arms around him. She loved living in the yurt and really wanted to make a go of it. Unfortunately, the weather did not want to cooperate.

“We don’t have to go right away. We can wait and see, and if it gets too cold, we can move back to the main house. And if you want, we can come back out here in the spring as soon as it’s warm enough, okay?”

“Okay.” Amber hugged him, before stepping back. Holding his hand, she said, “Let’s go back inside, before you catch pneumonia.”

Bernd nodded. He did not need to be told twice about the cold. “Sounds like a plan.” He grinned.

Amber shook her head at him. “Then what are we waiting for?”

“Dunno.”

They took one last look at the night sky, before heading inside.
