“Ooh!” Tino carefully made his through the antique shop, leaving his bewildered husband behind. He stood in front of an antique pie safe, admiring the stacks of handmade quilts inside. The bits of fabric, in the folds facing him, were all the colors of the rainbow, with just as many patterns. Tino gently eased something pink and floral out from the middle of the pile.
“There you are!” Didi said as he made his way towards him.
Tino turned to face him. “Look! It’s Nonna’s quilt!” Holding the quilt close, he beamed at his husband.
Didi blinked. “It is?”
“Well, not exactly, I have no idea if my grandmother knew how to make quilts or not, but if she did, she’d definitely make this one!” Tino said as if that explained everything.
“Oh.” Didi smiled. “You want to get it?”
Tino nodded. “Although, we’d have to hide it from your brother.”
“Yeah?” Didi tilted his head in that way that Tino always found absolutely adorable.
“It’s pink! You know how much he loves anything pink!” Tino giggled. “I can’t believe you forgot that his room looks like someone-”
“Threw up Pepto-Bismol all over the place,” Didi finished. He chuckled at the memory of Bernd’s pink confection of a princess room. The funny thing was, it was still as pink now, some twenty years later, as it was then. Even their niece, Bernd’s daughter Maria, had left little girl pink behind for a more grown up grey and yellow when she turned thirteen.
“See?”
“Yeah. Do you want to get it?”
“Can we?” Tino gave his husband his best cute and adorable look.
Didi shook his head. “Let’s go, before you decide to redecorate our apartment to rival my brother’s wildest pink fantasies.” He tenderly cupped his husband’s cheek.
“Okay! Oh, and uh, Didi?”
“What?”
“There’s a print of a pink kitten over there that I want to get,” Tino teased.
Didi leaned in and stared deep into his husband’s eyes. “Hey, Bernd, I want my husband back.” He gently rapped his knuckle’s on Tino’s head. “Okay?”
“Okay,” Tino said in a poor imitation of Bernd’s voice. He smiled impishly. “Oooh… Where are we?” he said playfully.
Didi heaved a long suffering sigh. His husband could be such a goofball at times, but he would not have it any other way. His beloved made life interesting and fun, and if an old pink quilt would make him happy, then Didi would eagerly get one or anything else he desired on their way to the register.
