Summary: Didi and Tino make birdfeeders out of pinecones…
Author’s Notes: Thanks to my beta Kat for pinking this for me.

Didi and Tino took the pinecones they had collected on various walks and smeared peanut butter all over them. Then they rolled the pinecones in the bird seed; Didi had picked up at the hardware store on his way home from work. They set the bird seed covered pinecones on a baking sheet. When they were finished, Tino got out some string and tied a loop on the top of the pinecones so they could hang them up on their apartment’s balcony. They normally used a birdfeeder, but it broke during a recent snow storm and they had not had a chance to replace it yet. So, instead of using the pinecones as a holiday decoration, they decided they would use them as a simple birdfeeder, along with an old pie pan full of seed and bits of stale bread.

The two of them headed outside on the balcony. Instead of hanging them on the plant hook they normally hung their feeder on and swapping them out when the birds finished one, they decided to make use of their “garden.” They walked over to the large planters with trellises in them. During the summer they grew zucchini in the one planter and tomatoes in the other. Now the pinecones hung on the trellises like fruit on some strange trees. The pie pan was placed below the planters, before they headed back inside.

Mugs of cocoa in hand, Tino and Didi sat down to watch some TV. Occasionally, they would steal a glance at the sliding glass door leading to the balcony. Tino happened to be looking that way, when he spotted a little bird, sitting on the railing.

“Look, Didi! They’re back!”

Didi followed his husband’s gaze. “You’re right.” He smiled, and reaching for Tino’s hand, he gave it a gentle squeeze. “They like them. That was a good use for those pinecones.”

“I saw it online when I was looking for a new birdfeeder. They looked pretty easy to do and we could always do some other craft with the kids when they come over.”

Didi nodded. “Ja, it shouldn’t be too hard to come up with something.”

“Yeah.” Tino snuggled up next to his husband. The TV forgotten, they sat and watched the parade of birds that came to visit their new feeders.
