“Here,” Bernd said as he handed Amber a cup of pumpkin spice tea. He had made it in her favorite Halloween mug, hoping the sight and smell of the tea, along with its warmth would make her feel better. “If there’s anything else you need, let me know, okay?”
Amber nodded. “Thanks,” she croaked as Bernd fussed with the fuzzy blanket she had wrapped herself in. It was so unfair. She rarely got sick and when she did, it was generally just a cold. Who knew this time the sniffles would turn out to be an early in the season case of the flu? And what horrible timing too! It was the day before Halloween and she felt like death warmed over! She would have laughed, but everything hurt, including her hair, so she simply stared bleary-eyed at her boyfriend.
She sipped her tea and waved him away. She was miserable and while she appreciated his efforts to nurse her back to health so they could go trick-or-treating tomorrow night, Amber just wanted to wallow in self-pity, until she realized things could be worse. Bernd could be lying in bed “dying” of the flu and as sick as she was, she knew she would be the one making tea and seeing to it he ate the chicken soup Vati made.
Amber chuckled softly, although it sounded more like a cough. Bernd was the worst patient ever, and she wondered if a taste of his own medicine would cure that habit. Then again, the thought of Vati and Didi worrying about her, quashed that idea. So she sipped her tea, before lying back on the sofa. Maybe a nap would help her feel better.
Bernd poked his head into the den. “You okay?”
“Yeah.” Amber leaned forward to put the mug on the coffee table. Bernd was by her side in what felt like a second later. He took the mug from her and fussed over her for a few minutes, before turning on the TV and leaving her be.
Amber settled back on the sofa and closed her eyes. It was not long before she was sound asleep.
