“You like it?” Bernd said as Amber opened her eyes.
She stood there, taking it all in. According to Bernd, he, and Vati, with some help from his younger brother Didi and her twin brother James, had made her a proper room in the basement of the old farmhouse. She now had a permanent refuge from her troubled relationship with her mother and no longer needed to sneak in the house to spend the night, hanging out with Bernd. “Hunh?”
“You like the pillows? Didi said Vati got them last year during the after Halloween sale at the mall. And I got the candles at the craft store and Didi came with and he found the boo sign and the flags and James found the voodoo dolls and that’s the dresser you saw at the thrift store and,” Bernd rambled on, barely pausing to take a breath.
“Yeah, it’s,” she smiled, “awesome. Thank you.”
“Sweet! I knew you’d like it!!” Bernd grinned. “Amber, Vati said he’d find a place for your zoo too! Wanna get your stuff and bring it here?”
“Ummm… Can I just spend some me time here? I mean, I can’t believe it’s really my room.”
Bernd nodded. “Okay! You’ll come and get me and we’ll get your stuff when you’re ready, okay?”
She nodded back at him. “Yeah.”
“Catch you later!” He grinned and left her on her own.
Mine… Amber thought as she explored her room.
