Prompts: An Unexpected Encounter At The Coffee Shop
Author’s note: Please note this is unbetaed and any mistakes therein are my own. Please also note that Amber and James belong to my beta Kat.
Amber hated feeling like everyone in the campus coffee shop was staring at them, while she did her best to comfort Bernd. He had had a particularly rough therapy session and when he had met her there, he burst into tears. His coffee was left untouched as he folded his arms on the table and put his head down. She knew he hated therapy, but she insisted on him going if they were going to build a life together. She also went to couples therapy with him.
She looked up at the sound of the bell hanging on the coffee shop’s door. A group of their fellow students were leaving, and shifting her attention back on her boyfriend, she missed seeing the tall guy with the blue Mohawk and his shorter friend come in.
“Hey, Amber.”
Amber knew that voice all too well. Her twin brother was here. Maybe he can help her get Bernd to perk up as he was beginning to scare her. “Hey, James.” She leaned over and said softly, “Bernd, sit up. James is here.” What never expected to see was Bernd’s quasi-cousin Cesare. “Oh, hey, Cesare.”
“Hey,” they chorused.
“What’s wrong with him?” Cesare asked as sat down at their table.
Bernd sat up and wiped his eyes. “Therapy.”
“Hunh?”
“I had therapy this morning.” Bernd reached for a napkin and blew his nose. “What are you doing here?”
“I had a half day at school so James said to meet him here.”
“I figured I’d show him around,” James said. He drank his coffee.
“Oh.”
“Yeah, If this place is good enough for you chooches, then it’s good enough for me,” Cesare said between bites of his Danish. He drank his coffee.
Bernd chuckled. As horrible as he felt, he found Cesare’s statement funny. “So you’re a chooch too, hunh?” He reached for his cup of coffee and drank. Bernd made a face as it went down as it was cold.
Cesare sputtered wordlessly in reply as James sat there, trying hard not to laugh.
Amber sighed softly in relief. As much as she had initially feared this unexpected encounter, it turned out okay.
