For Kat... Happy Birthday and many, many, many more to come!! I hope your day was a special one!! <3

“Happy birthday, Amber,” Bernd said. He pushed his present towards her and smiled. “I hope you like it.”

“Thanks,” she replied. She smiled back at him. If the present was anything like the lopsided cake that he assured her was supposed to be a teapot, she was in for something… interesting.

“Umm… Maybe you should blow out the candles before opening it?” Bernd said, before singing Happy Birthday again.

Taking a deep breath, Amber blew them out. “Thanks,” she said again as she opened the box. Inside was a box of her favorite Twinning’s tea, a surprisingly normal looking teapot that probably came from the local thrift shop, and some weird-arsed, knitted-looking, lump of orange with a touch of green. “Bernd?” she said holding up what she hoped was not a hat.

“It’s a tea cozy! I found this pattern online for one that looked like a pumpkin, as I know how much you love Halloween,” he rambled on. “And it fits the teapot! I made sure to measure it as I went along.” Bernd beamed at her, clearly proud of his creation.

“It’s awesome,” Amber said with a smile. Now that she looked at it and with his unasked for help, put it on the teapot, she could see that it really was a pumpkin of sorts. “Shall I make us some tea to go with the cake? And we can try out my gifts?”

“Yeah! And you don’t need to wash the teapot.”

“Oh?”

Bernd nodded. “I washed it when I got it cuz I thought you’d want to use it right away!”

Amber snorted. “You know me too well.” She laughed at his lopsided grin.

“Yup!” He watched her putter around the kitchen, gathering what she needed to serve tea as well as cut them a slice of cake.

Amber set a mug and a small plate in front of him, placing the teacup James gave her for her birthday where she was sitting. It surprisingly matched the teapot Bernd gave her and she had a feeling her twin went shopping at the thrift with him. She idly wondered how Bernd managed to get James’ present at the same time without him finding out what he got him ahead of time. Then again, she mused, he probably helped Bernd pick out that Hawaiian shirt... The kettle whistled, pulling her from her thoughts. She turned off the stove and pre-heated the teapot, by filling it with hot water from the tap. Spilling it out, she replaced it with water from the kettle. Amber placed three tea bags in the teapot. She let the tea steep, while she cut into her birthday cake. At least the one Didi made, that they would have later on as dessert, looked like a cake and would taste like one too. It was all she could do to keep from laughing when she noticed that Bernd’s cake was a Funfetti one.

Bernd eagerly took the slice she handed him. He was worried she would not know how to cut the cake, but she seemed to figure it out without any trouble. Bernd hoped she liked it, but then again, it was a Funfetti cake, so what was he worried about? Everyone loved those according to Denis. He waited until she had the first bite, before having one of his own. It’s not bad if I say so myself…

“It’s good, Bernd.” Amber poured them a cup of tea. She sipped hers.

“Thanks,” he said softly as his cheeks heated up. He was worried she would hate it as he was not the baker his younger brother Didi was. He breathed a silent sigh of relief that she liked it as much as James liked the cake he made for him. He frowned. I wonder if Amber would have liked a boob cake too… He shrugged in response to her questioning glance. Who am I kidding…? Of course she would! I guess I can make her one next year…

They finished their celebration in companionable silence. As much as he would have liked to have helped, Bernd sat at the kitchen table while Amber carefully washed her new teapot and teacup. Setting it on the dish mat to dry, she said, “Can I leave my teapot here too?”

“Sure! We can ask Vati where to put it when he gets home from work.”

“Okay,” Amber said, her relief clearly heard in her voice. She was afraid if she brought them home, her mother would get mad and break them. “Hey, Numbnuts, let’s go play some video games.”

“Okay!” He frowned again. “Are you sure you want to spend your birthday doing that?”

“Yeah.”

“Awesomeness!”
