Bernd came back from the dollar store with a bag of stuff. He hurried up to his room, closing the door behind him. Opening his laptop, he found the video he was looking for on YouTube. He took out the two plastic doll houses and removed them from the packaging, before running down to the basement. He rummaged through Vati’s tool box, grabbing a utility knife, the glue gun, mat, and extra glue, before quickly running back up to his room.
He sat down at his desk and watched the beginning of the video. He paused it just long enough to remove the top of one house. Bernd took the utility knife and carefully cut away the bits of plastic that would have held the roof on. Pausing the video again, Bend checked to see if the pieces fit perfectly, which they did, before moving on to the discarded roof. He carefully cut the windows off as well as the bit of hipped roof. That piece he glued to the top of the roof on the second house. The two triangular roof/window pieces were glued to the sides of the roof. Bernd also glued the roofless house to the bottom of the second house, creating a two story house.
Taking one of the coffee tables that came with the houses, he used it to make a balcony for the second story’s door. Bernd reached for the Halloween necklaces and cut them apart. The skull beads he used as “legs” to raise the house up. The little “people,” that were also included, were glued on roof along with the bone beads from the necklace, which were used to make a “fence” along the bottom edge of the roof. The rest of the bones were glued onto the house as decoration. Bernd removed the window frames, before taking the house outside. There, he spray painted it an off white. The roof was spray painted grey.
Once the paint was dry, he went back up to his room and dry brushed a bit of burnt umber acrylic paint onto the body of the house, giving it an aged look. Bernd aged the house further by dry brushing on some watered down black chalk board paint. It was dabbed off with a tissue, which really added to the aged look. He did a similar thing on the roof, using grey and black paints. The house was really starting to look “haunted” in his humble opinion. The window frames and front door were also aged, before putting them back on the house. As a finishing touch, he glued a skull bead onto the front door, painting it grey to match. He also painted the inside of the house black. Bernd could not wait to give it to Amber.
When Halloween finally arrived, Bernd put a couple of battery operated tea lights inside and set it on his desk. He quickly got dressed in his costume and waited for Amber. Since they were going trick or treating as a part of a group, it did not take long for her to arrive along with her twin brother James. Bernd brought them upstairs to his room.
“Here, James,” Bernd said, handing him a bag of gummy sharks.
“Thanks!” James grinned.
“And this is for you, Amber,” Bernd showed her the haunted house he made. “It’s your Haunted Mansion.”
“Wow… Thanks,” she said. Feeling her cheeks heat up, she leaned in, kissing his cheek, in an attempt to hide her embarrassment. “I love it. It’s cute and spooky at the same time…”
He blushed just as hard. “Thanks. I’m glad you like it.”
James looked over at it. “It’s kinda cool and very Amber.”
She made a face and punched her twin’s arm. “Shut up, Numbnuts!”
Before it could escalate into a huge fight, Bernd’s younger brother Didi poked his head in. “Come, everyone’s here! Let’s go trick or treating!”
“Awesomeness!” Bernd said as they followed Didi downstairs, for a fun night of trick or treating.
