Genre: slice of life
Author’s notes: Thanks go out to my beta, Kat, for pinking this for me as well as suggesting a reverse Advent calendar for this prompt. Please note Amber, Greta, & Minky belong to her. Maria & Fritz are shared.

Wolfgang purchased two large wicker baskets when he went food shopping. He also purchased several different types of canned food, from tuna to soup, to dry goods, like pasta and instant mash potatoes. Along with that, he added jars of sauce. He bought a couple of gift cards of various denominations as well. When he had amassed twenty four items, he took them to the checkout counter and bought them.

On the other side of town, Bernd and Amber were in the dollar store, picking up small items they could donate to the women’s shelter. They bought shampoo, toothpaste for adults and children, toys, books, socks, anything they could find that someone, who often had nothing but the clothes on their back, would need. Greta was there, shopping with them, picking up toys and items teens might like to give to the children in the hospital.

The adults had planned on doing a reverse advent calendar. Since Maria and Fritz were old enough to understand, they would be helping as well. Whoever opened the advent calendar for the day would get the treat and whoever did not, got to choose an item to add to one of their boxes. On Christmas Eve, everyone would play Santa and deliver the gifts. Maria, who had wanted to do one for the animal shelter and the animal clinic, got her uncles involved.

Mutti Minky, what are you doing for the kindness calendar?” Maria asked.

“I do that all year, Sassy Pants.”

“You do?”

Mishka nodded. “Remember when we went to the store and let the lady with the baby go ahead of us at the checkout line, even though we had less stuff?”

“Yeah.”

“That was a kindness. Just like when your bother held the door open for the old lady. Even the animal clinic does random acts of kindness by charging as little as they can for something. People return that ‘favor’ by donating money here and there. It’s a mitzvah to do things like that.”

“What’s a mitzvah?”

“A good deed. And it makes life so much nicer.” Mishka smiled.

“Yup!” Maria giggled.

“Would you like to help me do a mitzvah?”

“Sure! What do you want me to do?”

“Well,” Mishka started, “there’s someone at work who has a brother in the army and they’re stationed in Iraq.”

“Oh…”

“Yeah… and they said not everyone gets mail or Christmas cards or presents or stuff like that, so everyone in my office adopted a couple of the soldiers, who could use a lift like that. That’s why I bought all that candy at the end of Halloween and small toiletries whenever I’m at the pharmacy. I thought maybe you could help me, by writing a card and helping me make a goodie box for them.”

“Of course I’ll help you!”

“Thanks!” Mishka got out a box of Christmas cards and a list. “These are the names of the soldiers that could use a card. If you write them out for me, I’ll make a goodie box for them.”

“Okay.”

Together, they set to work. After awhile, Fritz came over to see what they were doing. He sat down to help too. It did not take long before everyone was sitting at the dining room table, writing out a card, making up goodie bags, or putting them in a box to be addressed.

“Thanks for helping me. You guys have no idea how happy you’ll make someone when they get this.”

“I think we do, Mishka,” Wolfgang said.

“Hey, Minky, do you want me to take them to the post office? I can do it tomorrow on my way in to the office,” Bernd said.

“Thanks, Bernd. That’s a big help.”

“No problem.”

Mishka cleaned up the table along with Maria. She smiled, feeling good about making someone’s day. Mishka looked at her “daughter” and said, “It feels good, doesn’t it?”

“Yeah!”

“That’s the side great side affect about mitzvoth.”

Mitzvoth?”

Mishka nodded. “Mitzvahs.”

“Oh…” Maria giggled. “I like it!” She could not help smiling.

“Me too!” Mishka smiled back at her.
