Author’s notes: Written for Winterfest in July Bingo 2019: family portraits.
Amber walked by the breakfast nook with a basket of laundry, stopped, and walked back. Fritz was sitting on a stool with his head lying down on the counter, staring off unblinkingly.
She paused. Amber couldn't think of anything that would have him down today and he seemed to have gotten over his kindergarten blues. “Fritz?”
He sighed. At least he was alive.
Amber set the laundry down. “Something wrong?”
Fritz turned so he was now facing the counter top.
“Frederick.” She hated using the “Mom voice” when he was so obviously down, but this was a bit dramatic even for him.
He mumbled something back to her.
Amber physically took hold of her son and turned him to face her. “Come again?”
He sighed. “The teacher is making me do my family picture over.”
“Why?” From his happy, bouncing babble yesterday, Amber could remember he had been fairly excited that everyone in his class were going to put up family portraits they drew on the bulletin board for family day. He was five. What on earth could he have drawn that his teacher made him do it over again?
“Because she said I didn't do the assignment, but she said to draw my family and I did!” Fritz looked so pained.
“Can I see the picture?”
Fritz just stared at her forlornly.
“Please?”
Fritz sighed yet again and hopped down from the stool to fetch the picture from his backpack. Normally, he showed her his artwork with such pride. She hurt on his behalf.
“Here,” he grumbled as he handed it to her.
Amber looked at the picture. It was quite good... considering he was five. Everyone had all their parts and were in relative proportion to everything else. “Can you tell me who everyone is?”
Fritz pointed to each person as he spoke. “That's you, that's Vati, that's Opa, that's Mutti Greta, that's Onkle Didi, and that's me. Those are the chickens and that's where Blitzkrieg lives. I didn't have time to draw Dee-Oh-Gee and your creepies, but I figured they'd understand.”
“That's very good, honey.” She kissed the side of his head and cuddled him close. “What didn't the teacher like about it?”
He sighed. “She said, I was only supposed to draw my 'mmediate family or the people I live with. I told her that I live with all those people. She said, that I can't have two mommies in my picture, but I have two mommies!” Fritz was starting to get hysterical.
Amber held him tight. “You put Mutti Greta in all the pictures you want. Now, go play with Onkle Didi so Mommy can go talk to your teacher, okay?”
Fritz nodded and with one more squeeze, he ran off to go play upstairs.
Amber looked at her watch. The teachers should still be there for afternoon classes. She remembered that pre-first day parent teacher night. It had been fine when Fritz had two mommies, but explaining that he had two mommies and a daddy all together had gone over less well. Walking to the mudroom for her coat, she realized she needed something else.
“Vati!” she called ahead of her as she approached Wolfgang's study. As Fritz' grandfather, he probably wanted in on this. Also, he was a calming presence and she was afraid she might stab Fritz' teacher with a dull, rusty spoon or something if she went on her own.
