Didi was resting in bed, trying to recover from the flu. He felt miserable and while he appreciated his life-partner Tino’s fussing over him, it got to be too much at times. This morning, however, it was strangely absent. Groaning softly as his body still felt achy, Didi got up out of bed to see where Tino went. He padded out of his bedroom and down the hall of their tiny apartment, where he found Tino in the kitchen making cookies. Didi smiled and before he could say anything, Tino spoke.
“What are you doing up?” Tino finished arranging the pieces of store bought slice and bake cookies on the tray.
Didi sighed. “I got tired of being in bed,” he croaked.
“You shouldn’t be up! You need to rest so you can get better,” Tino fussed. He placed a cool hand on his life-partner’s forehead. “You still warm. Go lie on the sofa,” he said, shooing his beloved out of the kitchen, before setting the timer.
“Yes, Mamma.” Didi smiled.
“When they’re ready, I’ll bring you some and some tea and honey for your throat.”
They left the kitchen together and a few minutes later, Didi was lying comfortably on the sofa, a throw across his lower half. Tino had put the TV on and he dozed while the narrator droned on about life on another planet. The next thing Didi know, his beloved was waking him up and helping to sit up.
“Here, drink this.” Tino handed Didi a cup of tea with honey.
Didi obediently drank. It was not too hot and it actually felt good going down. A plate of cookies was handed to him and Didi ate a couple of them. The tea and cookies were just enough to kill the budding hunger pangs, not that he had any appetite. Feeling a bit better, Didi found he was beginning to enjoy the fussing over. Having grown up with his father or Amber looking after him whenever he was sick, Tino’s fussing was similar and welcome, unlike the rare occasions when his older brother Bernd would look after him. Bernd would be so anxious, especially when he got older, that Didi remembered lying about feeling better, just to get him to calm down. But this, this was nice in every sense of the word. He thought it almost made getting sick worth it. Then again, Tino always looked after him and it was one of the reasons Didi loved him so much. He had a feeling that every time he saw a tube of that cookie dough, he would remember the time he got the flu and the way Tino nursed him back to health with a cup of tea and plate of cookies.
