Dee-oh-gee sat patiently, while Bernd attached the leash to his collar. He wagged his tail when Bernd patted him on the head. “Let’s go, boy.” Dee-oh-gee got up and followed his “pack.” When Fritz dropped his trick-or-treat bucket, the dog picked it up by the handle just like Bernd had taught him and carried it.
“Fritz, that’s your pumpkin,” Amber said to her son.
“Dee-oh-gee carry, Mutti.” Fritz gave her a grin that would have been at home on his father’s face.
Amber shook her head. “Let’s go before it gets dark. You have a handful of …” she paused as she looked for the right word.
“Yeah,” Bernd said, as if reading her mind.
“Good.”
They left the yurt they called home and walked over to the main house. Fritz ran up to the back door. “Come’re, Dee-oh-gee!” he said as he banged his hand on the door. Bernd walked the dog over to him and reached up to ring the doorbell.
“Trick treats, Opa!” Fritz cried when his grandfather answered the door.
“Here you go, Fritzchen,” Wolfgang said as he handed a couple of lollipops to his two year old grandson.
“Danke, Opa! Dee-oh-gee says trick treats!”
Wolfgang looked at his son and Bernd shrugged.
Dee-oh-gee whined and wagged his tail. He still held the pumpkin bucket’s handle in his mouth and at the mention of his name and the word “treat” he thought he was getting one.
“Okay. Opa will be right back.”
“Okay.”
Wolfgang returned a few minutes later with a dog biscuit. Dee-oh-gee sat and wagged his tail. “For der Hund.”
“Danke! Let’s go, Vati!” Fritz said as he took his father by the hand.
“Bye, Vati,” Amber said to Wolfgang.
“Bye!” Wolfgang watched them go, before closing the door.
They continued on their way, trick-or-treating in their neighborhood. When they got home, Amber and Bernd were surprised to find that Dee-oh-gee did almost as well treat-wise as Fritz. They found twenty dog biscuits in amongst the various bits of candy Fritz had gotten while out trick-or-treating.
